The LFF was founded in 1921, and then operated until 1940 as the Latvian Football Union. Immediately after regaining independence, the LFF resumed its activities in 1991. The LFF officially joined the International Association of Football Federations (FIFA) in 1922, but was expelled from it after Latvia was incorporated into the USSR. It rejoined in 1992 after Latvia regained its independence. The LFF was also included in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) in 1992.
The Latvian Football Federation (LFF) is the only and official football association in Latvia recognized by FIFA and UEFA, and is responsible for the development of football in the country, as well as having the right to represent Latvia in FIFA, UEFA and other sports institutions. The LFF holds the exclusive right to organize and conduct football competitions at all levels.
The daily work of the LFF is dedicated to the organization and management of football events in the country. The current president of the LFF is Vadim Lyashenko, who took office in July 2020.
The golden moment of Latvian football was the team’s qualification for the 2004 UEFA European Championship finals in Portugal. The Golden Day of Latvian football was 19 November 2003 – at the packed Inonu Stadium in Istanbul in front of thousands of Turkish fans, the Latvian national football team took to the field four days after winning in Riga (1:0), came back with two goals in the second half and played to a draw (2:2), beating their opponent on aggregate and qualifying for the 2004 UEFA European Football Championship finals.
